According to CTIA best practices: “Person-to-Person (P2P) generally describes the low-volume exchange of wireless messages between end users… the concept of consistent with typical human operation defines P2P traffic to distinguish P2P from A2P traffic.”

One-way SMS to which recipients are not expected to reply. Typically this represents high volume messaging between businesses and individuals.

Some common examples are a logistics company sending delivery statuses and notifications, a dentist’s office sending one-way alerts and reminders, or a financial institution sending PIN codes to individuals either using short codes or long codes.

According to  CTIA best practices: “A2P traffic is all messaging that falls outside the definition of P2P (i.e., traffic that is not consistent with typical human operation).

The character limit for a single SMS message is 160 characters, however most modern phones and networks support concatenation and segment and rebuild messages up to 1600 characters.  Messages not using GSM-7 encoding are limited to 67 characters.

GSM-7 is a character encoding standard which packs the most commonly used letters and symbols in many languages into 7 bits each for usage on GSM networks.  As SMS messages are transmitted 140 8-bit octets at a time, GSM-7 encoded SMS messages can carry up to 160 characters.

The maximum number of characters per single message being sent to carriers depends on the encoding used, and the encoding used depends on the content of the message. The HTTP API limits SMS messages to a maximum length of 2048 characters.

  • A message containing text characters only will be encoded using GSM-7
  • A message containing emojis will be encoded using UCS-2

Depending on the message content (plain text, emojis, special characters etc), TexTalk will use either GSM-7 or UCS-2 encoding to send the messages and each encoding has limitations to the number of characters that can be sent. The limitations for a single segment are –

  • 160 characters for GSM-7 (e.g. Latin-1/9 and GSM8).
  • 70 characters for UCS-2 (e.g. message with emojis)

When you send a message whose text is longer than the maximum number of characters per segment, TexTalk will automatically split the message for you, add a special header (User Data Header), and send multiple SMS to carriers.

GSM Single Segment(140 bytes x 8 bits) / 7 bits160 characters
GSM Multi Segment((140 bytes – 6 bytes) x 8 bits) / 7 bits153 characters
Unicode Single Segment(140 bytes x 8 bits) / 16 bits70 characters
Unicode Multi Segment((140 bytes – 6 bytes) x 8 bits) / 16 bits67 characters

A Message Detail Record (MDR) is a report that documents the details of the SMS and MMS messages that you send and or receive.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a standard way to send messages that include multimedia content to and from a mobile phone over a cellular network. MMS allows the sender to send messages with media files (such as pictures), videos, and audio files all in one message or separately in individual messages.

There are different rate limit settings for SMS and MMS.

During onboarding, standard rate limits are applied to the account for both.  The standard account level rate limit is 1 mps. There are also industry standards for rate limits of 1 message per second per number that must be followed.

The most widely supported attachment types are jpeg, png and gif images. TexTalk will accept all content types on the list below but deliverability is not guaranteed since downstream carriers and handsets may have limitations on what types of files they accept.

TexTalk send messages over 160 characters to international phone numbers (for GSM-7 encoding), or 70 characters (for UCS-2 encoding).

TexTalk will always segment and send as a concatenated message. In many cases, destination operators support this feature.  They may, however, appear as multiple messages on the destination handset, depending on whether the receiving carrier supports concatenated SMS.
